What’s up guys? Hope you had a memorable July/ pre August and are all set to finish off summer on a high note! I took some time off last month to travel with my family and had a blast. From watching fireworks at the mall, to experiencing the strength of nature at Niagara Falls: each and every place left a unique vibe in me that gave me the inspiration to put together the future sets you will be hearing in the coming weeks.
Love parade 2010 photo courtesy of Reuters
Alrighty, lets get things started. There was a tragic incident at Love Parade festival which took place in Germany last month. There was a stampede as folks were trying to get into the event. About 20 innocent lives were lost and many were feared injured. This is unfortunate and hope organizers of future concerts/ events take note of this. My prayers go to the families who lost their loved ones.
I got a request to mix the song, My Guru- Jack Johnson with a hip-hop song. Even though, hip-hop is not my forte, I was down for it. I did a mashup of the song, My Guru( infused some good house in it “-”) and it is the first track in this weeks mix. Let me know what you guys think about the mashup?
DJ Phil Minnick
Also, adding to the excitement for this weeks set, is our guest DJ, Phil Minnick. Phil’s 30 minute set is featured in second half of this set. I met Phil at Winter Music conference which took place in Miami earlier this year. Its crazy that we were living in the same room in the same hostel for the Winter Music conference and six months later, we started working on our own dj sets. Feel free to check out his mixes at http://www.facebook.com/DJ.Phil.Minnick
Crank that volume up!

My pick for this weeks club banger is Sander Van Droon presents Purple Haze – Hymn 2.0. It is an insanely amazing track and the video is a sneak peak into the life of first rate DJ . Check out the 90 second preview of pure awesomeness and euphoria!
and here’s the cheesy version for the chikkas..quite frankly a waste of technology on the video

Tonight will be the last time Santa Fe cafe will be open to the public. It is a crazy feeling which is hard to digest. I cannot imagine walking past an empty deserted Santa Fe (or popularly known as Fe) on a Thursday night. We have all had some memories at Fe. That first shot, the hot girl who you could not take your eyes off, bumping into an old friend etc. Fe was kind of a home away from home for me. I used to go to Fe literally every night as I was friends with most of the folks who worked at Fe. We used to have fun conversations and my indian accent did not help either. My awesome memory of Fe was the night I hung out Mark Srour, owner of Santa Fe, Mark and Cornerstone. Its funny as I bought him a drink at his own bar at Le Mark.He laughed at it and we went bar hopping from there to Fe and Cornerstone. We spoke about life and the vision he had for Fe. It is crazy to think, I hung out and drank with the owner of three bars in College Park but that is just how random my life is.
It is a fairytale ending for folks who worked at Fe in their senior year and are graduating.Fe will always be special for me for the people who ran it and the awesome memories. What’s your awesome/ funny memory of Fe been?
Hey what’s up guys? Sorry I haven’t written in awhile, it’s been pretty hectic in the last several weeks. I’m sure you guys can understand. Hope your semester was enjoyable and finals weren’t too bad. (more…)

Ok maybe not because this restaurant has been there for a while but many Terps probably did not know about it. So I decided to check out Hanami as I kind of was tired of eating out at the same places along route 1. Hanami is a Japanese restaurant located along Baltimore Avenue opposite to University View. So, on a windy lazy Sunday evening, I went to Hanami for dinner with a friend of mine, who loves sushi. I had not tried Japanese cuisine before so was kind of nervous and not sure of what to order. At the same time, I was excited as you never know; I might end up digging Japanese cuisine just like Thai. The ambience in the restaurant was calm and relaxing; perfect place for a dinner date. We decided to try out dragon balls and octopus legs for starters. My friend did most of the ordering as he was more knowledgeable on Japanese cuisine. The service was good and we had the starters served to us without much wait.

My initial observation was the presentation. The food looked delicious and I hoped it tasted the same. However before all that could begin, I had to figure out using chop sticks. I tried my best at using them and eventually gave up as am pretty sure given the rate I was going, we would not be able to complete our dinner by the time the restaurant closed. So, I swallowed my ego and requested for a fork and knife and the waitress gave me a smile which said it all. Round 1 of starters was good. The dragon ball had a very unique taste and the avocado flavor made it all the more exciting and enjoyable.

Round 2 of main course meal was an interesting combination of dishes. My friend had got a sushi platter (Sushi & Sashimi Combo) which had all the different types of sushi (5 pieces of sushi & 12 pieces of Sashimi and 1 California roll) you could imagine and it looked great.

I went for the more traditional noodles with egg whites, shrimp and chicken (Nabe Yaki Udon). Apparently noodles are an integral part of Japanese cuisine, which was good to add as a Wikipedia entry in my brain. The sushi was first rate and fresh. If you like spicy food like I do, try mixing wasabi (the green thingy) with soy sauce. It has got a very unique flavor and spice. A word of caution, you may either love the paste (wasabi + soy) or hate me for the rest of your life. However, that is the same thing with Sushi. Some people dig it; while some can live without it. After having successfully tried the sushi, I tried to finish my huge bowl of noodles, egg whites, chicken and shrimp. However I was so full, I could not finish my meal. The bill was kind of expensive but for the food we ordered, it was fair.
Overall, Hanami offers great sushi and decent Japanese food. You should definitely check it out and post your thoughts about experience as comments to this post below.
The Ultra music festival 12 2010 which took place last week in Miami at the conclusion of Winter Music Conference was epic. The event was sold out for 2 days with about 50,000 electronic music lovers (on both days) from all over the world coming together to celebrate this amazing music event. Age, color, sex was no bar for this event. (more…)
