It is a crazy feeling which is hard to digest. I cannot imagine walking past an empty deserted Santa Fe (or popularly known as Fe) on a Thursday night. We have all had some memories at Fe. That first shot, the hot girl who you could not take your eyes off, bumping into an old friend etc. Fe was kind of a home away from home for me. I used to go to Fe literally every night as I was friends with most of the folks who worked at Fe. We used to have fun conversations and my indian accent did not help either. My awesome memory of Fe was the night I hung out Mark Srour, owner of Santa Fe, Mark and Cornerstone. Its funny as I bought him a drink at his own bar at Le Mark.He laughed at it and we went bar hopping from there to Fe and Cornerstone. We spoke about life and the vision he had for Fe. It is crazy to think, I hung out and drank with the owner of three bars in College Park but that is just how random my life is.

It is a fairytale ending for folks who worked at Fe in their senior year and are graduating.Fe will always be special for me for the people who ran it and the awesome memories. What’s your awesome/ funny memory of Fe been?

Photo taken by Jeff Tong, jefftongphotography@gmail.com

Ok maybe not because this restaurant has been there for a while but many Terps probably did not know about it. So I decided to check out Hanami as I kind of was tired of eating out at the same places along route 1. Hanami is a Japanese restaurant located along Baltimore Avenue opposite to University View. So, on a windy lazy Sunday evening, I went to Hanami for dinner with a friend of mine, who loves sushi. I had not tried Japanese cuisine before so was kind of nervous and not sure of what to order. At the same time, I was excited as you never know; I might end up digging Japanese cuisine just like Thai. The ambience in the restaurant was calm and relaxing; perfect place for a dinner date. We decided to try out dragon balls and octopus legs for starters. My friend did most of the ordering as he was more knowledgeable on Japanese cuisine. The service was good and we had the starters served to us without much wait.

Photo taken by Jeff Tong, jefftongphotography@gmail.com

My initial observation was the presentation. The food looked delicious and I hoped it tasted the same. However before all that could begin, I had to figure out using chop sticks. I tried my best at using them and eventually gave up as am pretty sure given the rate I was going, we would not be able to complete our dinner by the time the restaurant closed. So, I swallowed my ego and requested for a fork and knife and the waitress gave me a smile which said it all. Round 1 of starters was good. The dragon ball had a very unique taste and the avocado flavor made it all the more exciting and enjoyable.

Photo taken by Jeff Tong, jefftongphotography@gmail.com

Round 2 of main course meal was an interesting combination of dishes. My friend had got a sushi platter (Sushi & Sashimi Combo) which had all the different types of sushi (5 pieces of sushi & 12 pieces of Sashimi and 1 California roll) you could imagine and it looked great.

Photo taken by Jeff Tong, jefftongphotography@gmail.com

I went for the more traditional noodles with egg whites, shrimp and chicken (Nabe Yaki Udon). Apparently noodles are an integral part of Japanese cuisine, which was good to add as a Wikipedia entry in my brain. The sushi was first rate and fresh. If you like spicy food like I do, try mixing wasabi (the green thingy) with soy sauce. It has got a very unique flavor and spice. A word of caution, you may either love the paste (wasabi + soy) or hate me for the rest of your life. However, that is the same thing with Sushi. Some people dig it; while some can live without it. After having successfully tried the sushi, I tried to finish my huge bowl of noodles, egg whites, chicken and shrimp. However I was so full, I could not finish my meal. The bill was kind of expensive but for the food we ordered, it was fair.
Overall, Hanami offers great sushi and decent Japanese food. You should definitely check it out and post your thoughts about experience as comments to this post below.

P.S. fun factoid about Hanami is its BYOB “-“

どうもありがとう。/ Dōmo arigatō

The Ultra music festival 12 2010 which took place last week in Miami at the conclusion of Winter Music Conference was epic. The event was sold out for 2 days with about 50,000 electronic music lovers (on both days) from all over the world coming together to celebrate this amazing music event. Age, color, sex was no bar for this event. You had people dressed up in creative and at times weird Halloween costumes indulge in over 18 hours of quality electronic music watching their favorite artists perform live. Over 117 top artist performed over 2 days spread across 6 stages spread across the arena. In terms of production quality, Ultra music festival set the new bar as compared to Electric Zoo. The sound, stage setups, huge tents with amazing ambiance were unreal and you had to be there to experience it. Day 1 started off on a shaky start with some rain in the early afternoon. However, the weather Gods had mercy on us and the beautiful sun started shining providing the perfect backdrop for the festival to begin. I had selected the will call option while buying my tickets for the festival. The lines were long but once I got my ticket I was good to go. It was confusing at first when we got in, as we were not given a map of where the different artists were performing. So, we strolled around the different arenas checking out different artists. Luciano killed it in the Carl Cox and friends’ arena. That was one of the most amazing things to come out of the festival for me: discovering new artists with fresh and unique sounds. AfroJack’s mix on Jason Derülo – Whatcha Say was amazing. The Ultra main stage looked amazing at night with David Guetta’s set using a beautiful combination of lights. There came a time where it was so difficult to choose between which artists to check out as so much was going on at the same time. As the event unfolded on day 1, the stage was set for Tiësto to play an amazing set. Wolfgang Gartner opened for Tiësto and it has to be one of the most difficult things to open for the no.1 DJ in the world. Tiësto started his set with the opening track from his album Kaleidoscope and got the crowd into fist pumping mode with his popular tracks. Two guys would pop out at random in middle of the set on two ends of the stage in robot costumes which was so interesting

The weather forecast for Day 2 was warm, sunny and awesome. We got hold of the event flyer in the beginning and planned the different arenas to visit to check out our favorite artists. The Brazil Arena was definitely the place to be with the most incredible lineup of artists. We started our day with some energetic, fist pumping set by Steve Aoki. Aoki put so much energy in his performance and it was infectious. He had the crowd grooving to his beats and the whole arena smelt good when he popped open a bottle of champagne in middle of his set. Atrak played a great set post Aoki and it was a great to experience it live. We spend most of the evening at the UMF Brazil arena kicking it off with Jerome Isma-Ae, Sander Van Doorn. We had to check out Benny Benassi play out his signature satisfaction tune at the Ultra main stage. It was relaxing to just lay your body on the grass, feel the bass run through your body, experience the craziness and joy happening around you and yes listening to some amazing music. Yes, we were at Ultra and we are part of history. We got to check out a lot of interesting new sounds and artists. We returned to UMF Brazil Arena to check out Gareth Emery and Markus Schultz. They had the crowd jumping and grooving to the beautiful beats of electronic music. Sasha & John Digweed put up a great set in the Carl Cox & Friends arena. The Biscayne and Bayfront Live stage had an amazing lineup of raw, talented artists. In midst of the craziness, I was fortunate to check out artists like Caspa, Orbital, Afrobeta and Ghostland Observatory. As the event drew to a climax, it was time for the big names to play their sets. Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond, ATB, Swedish House Mafia and Paul Oakenfold tore the roof apart. The closing act was performed by Deadmau5 on the Ultra Main Stage which was a beautifully lit. Deadmau5 closed his set with the tune in the Mario video game when Mario dies and shouts of an encore were not entertained. As we headed to the exit, we heard an announcement that Ultra fest 2011 will be spread over 3 days to which the crowd went crazy.

In all, it was a musical event which was an experience of a lifetime. It is a dream for any DJ to perform for electronic music lovers from all over the world and a learning experience for DJ’s like me. Every artist played their hearts out and made Ultra music festival special. My defining moment of the Ultra music festival was a 7 year old seated on the shoulders of his dad, with a glow necklace around his neck fist pumping to some fine electronic music. It brought tears to my eyes and who knows he might well end up being the next Armin Van Buuren or Tiësto. The stage is set for Ultra Music festival 13 2011. Will you be there?

“There is no rest for the wicked”

I just came back to campus yesterday and it turned out to be a very interesting day. The highlight would have to be that I got flashed on the Garden State Parkway in Jersey!

So I was driving back to UMD with some chick who I kind of know and some guy in the neighboring car is staring us down. Now, the driver is not the type to cause conflicts but rather sees the best in everyone, so I go and take the initiative and stare him down. He swings over to my side and his girl flashes me! She’s not the greatest looking girl, but I’m not complaining. It was my first time being flashed. Even if she was in her late 20s early 30s. What’s not to love about the experience!? We just laugh about it on the trip down, which turned out to be pretty fast and very enjoyable. From that point, I knew it was going to be a great day.

As soon as we got back, we went to Noodles. I’ve never been there before and that turned to be an amazing 1st time as well. I couldn’t believe it felt like a real restaurant with waiters and booths, which are fantastic by the way! A nap in the warm afternoon reinforced that feeling of euphoria. Finally I hung out with some of my boys in the night which was guaranteed to be a good time. By far the best trip down to campus in my 2 years of college life. Hope your journeys back are smooth and relaxing in this beautiful weather. That’s all I got for now ladies and gents, and until next time remember these words:

Don’t take yourself out of the race before it even begins.

Keep on rockin,

With just a few days left for Spring break to begin and the weather being fabulous, everyone is eager to get started on the best week of the semester, Spring break. Yes, it is that time of the year where you get to party in a tropical paradise, dress up like a jersey shore wannabe and show off your Miami abs. Well, there is more to Spring break than partying. If you have not made up your Spring break plans yet, here are some last minute pointers:

1. Road trips: Road trips can be an enjoyable way to spend quality time with a select few friends while enjoying the diversity and variety of different towns you pass by. It is cheap on the wallet too and extremely fun.

2. Last minute deals on cruises/ exotic getaways: It is going to be difficult to find a deal now. However, feel free to check these websites: www.studentuniverse.com and www.statravel.com. I use these websites regularly and get good student fares.

3. St. Patrick’s day in NYC: You definitely have to experience this. It is definitely a fun time to be in the city. Check out this website for more details: http://www.st-patricks-day.com/st_patricks_day_parades_united_states_new_york.html

4. Atlantic City/ Ocean City weekend getaway: Try getting in touch with that friend of yours who has a beach house and do offer to pay. This way, you can work for better part of Spring break and make money to pay for your Atlantic City/ Ocean City weekend getaway.

5. Ultra Music festival 2010: This is the mother of all dance concerts. Every big DJ is going to be there and it is all going down in Miami. Check out the website for the ridiculous lineup. http://www.ultramusicfestival.com/. The good thing is it falls on March 26 and 27, a week after Spring break. So, if you have not made up your plans yet, you could get a temp job over spring break and make money to pay for Ultra fest in Miami.

6. Productive: Spring break could also be a great excuse to pursue your creative element. You can do things which you always wanted to do like work on a painting, a business idea, and music video etc. whatever excites you and you are passionate about.

7. Make loot: You could make good money over Spring break to pay for your textbooks next semester. People often need help during Spring break and you can always let people in your community know of your availability to work during break. A good step would be to contact a local temp agency, ask parents or even the company you interned last summer for a job over the break.

8. Alternative Spring break: This has been extremely popular among students as it is cheap and a good way to give back to the community. It is late to apply this year but you should definitely apply for it next year.

9. Sell your stuff: Do you have lots of stuff in your closet and your room back home which you no longer use? Well, get on ebay and sell them.

10. Shamrock festival: A great way to jump start Spring break. Check out the website for more details: http://www.shamrockfest.com/2010/

For all those ballers heading off to Spring break, here are a few safe pointers:
